Patching carpet in Wellington, and fixing carpet that's pulling up

Most damage to a carpet is in one place. Cutting that piece out and patching it is usually far cheaper than re-carpeting the room.

How a carpet patch is done

The damaged section is cut out cleanly, keeping the cut as small as the damage allows. A replacement piece is cut to the same shape, laid with its pile running the same way as the surrounding carpet, and joined from underneath.

The replacement carpet has to come from you: a spare off-cut from the original install, or a small piece from inside a wardrobe or cupboard, which we fill with a plain off-cut. It's the only way that works. Carpet in the open fades and wears, so even a piece from the same room rarely matches exactly. A good patch is a real improvement on the damage, not a perfect match.

Damage we patch

  • Burns and scorch marks, including around fireplaces
  • Holes, cuts and tears
  • Hair dye, nail polish and glue that won't come out
  • Pot-plant and mould marks
  • Damage from carpet moth

Carpet pulling up at the edges

Carpet lifts at the edges for several reasons: how it was laid, humidity changes, heavy furniture dragged across it, or edges that were never properly fixed. Left alone, an edge that has pulled off its gripper starts to fray and unravel.

We refix lifted edges to the gripper or threshold strip, and repair the edge where it has already started to come apart. Where the whole carpet has relaxed and rippled, it needs re-stretching. See re-stretching.

How our carpet repair process works

  1. Tell us about the problem

Call us or fill in the form. If you can, send us a phone photo with a coin or your hand in it for scale. We give you a considered estimate, and if you're happy with it, you book a time for us to come to you.

  2. We find a piece of your carpet

The patch has to be your own carpet. If you kept an off-cut when it was laid, we use that. If not, we take a small piece from inside a wardrobe or cupboard and fill that gap with a plain off-cut of ours.

  3. We patch the damage

We cut out the damaged area and no more, fit your piece with the pile running the same way, and secure the join underneath.

Carpet patching questions

Can you patch very small areas of damage, like hair dye, nail polish, glue, or small burns and scorches around a fireplace?

Yes. Very small areas are often the most successful repairs, simply because they are small and not too obvious. It's a matter of using spare carpet, or carpet from a wardrobe or cupboard, and patching in tiny plugs of carpet to remove the burns or marks.

The edge of my carpet is lifting at the doorway. Can that be fixed?

Usually, yes. An edge that has pulled away from its gripper or threshold strip can be refixed. If the edge has frayed or unravelled, the damaged strip is trimmed or patched first.

Boyce is brilliant! I highly recommend him for his workmanship and he is polite, clean, tidy and very reasonably priced. We should have contacted him earlier and not put off the repairs we needed.

Boyce is an absolute wizard, I really thought there was no way the damage in the carpet wouldn't lead to having to replace it entirely, but he worked magic with a small off cut and you can't even tell there was an issue in the first place. He's also really friendly and professional, I highly recommend him.

Repairing a carpet costs a fraction of a new carpet.

Re-carpeting a room means uplift, underlay, disposal and a new carpet that may not match the next room. A repair deals with the damaged area and no more.

We'll be honest about the result. Carpet that has been out in the room for years has faded and worn, so a patch rarely matches it perfectly. A good repair is a real improvement, far less noticeable than the damage, rather than a perfect match.

If a repair isn't the right call for your carpet, we'll tell you.
