Re-stretching rippled carpet in Wellington, and fixing carpet that's pulling up
Ripples, waves and bulges mean the carpet has relaxed off its grippers. Re-stretching pulls it tight across the room and refixes it at the walls.

Why carpet ripples
- It wasn't stretched tightly enough when it was laid
- Changes in humidity and temperature let it expand and relax
- Heavy furniture has been dragged across it
- The underlay is too soft, or has been soaked by a leak or over-wet cleaning
- The carpet's two backings have separated, so the top layer moves and lumps up
Ripples get walked on, and a carpet that is walked on while rippled wears along the creases. Once a crease has set sharply, it can't be fully taken out. Re-stretching earlier gives a better result.
How we re-stretch carpet
We lift the carpet at the wall, re-tension it across the room with a power-stretcher, trim the excess and refix it to the grippers. It's done in your home, at a time arranged with you.
If the grippers, underlay or backing are the real problem, we'll tell you, and what it means for the repair, before we start.

How our carpet repair process works
-
Tell us about the problem
Call us or fill in the form. If you can, send us a phone photo with a coin or your hand in it for scale. We give you a considered estimate, and if you're happy with it, you book a time for us to come to you.
-
We find a piece of your carpet
The patch has to be your own carpet. If you kept an off-cut when it was laid, we use that. If not, we take a small piece from inside a wardrobe or cupboard and fill that gap with a plain off-cut of ours.
-
We patch the damage
We cut out the damaged area and no more, fit your piece with the pile running the same way, and secure the join underneath.
Weighing it up?
Call us for a chat about the damage, or ask for an estimate and we'll tell you whether it's worth repairing.
Carpet re-stretching questions
How do you stretch or restretch a carpet?
A simple but strong tool called a power-stretcher is placed on the carpet, with its 'foot' resting against one wall while the 'head', which has sharp teeth, is placed at the opposite side of the room. A ratchet lever on the head is used to gently pull the carpet tight again. Excess carpet, surprisingly often no more than 10 to 20 mm, is trimmed off and the carpet is refinished to the wall.
Will the ripples come back?
Not usually, provided the grippers and underlay are sound. If the underlay is worn out or the carpet backing has separated, we will tell you before we start.

Boyce is an absolute wizard, I really thought there was no way the damage in the carpet wouldn't lead to having to replace it entirely, but he worked magic with a small off cut and you can't even tell there was an issue in the first place. He's also really friendly and professional, I highly recommend him.

Repairing a carpet costs a fraction of a new carpet.
Re-carpeting a room means uplift, underlay, disposal and a new carpet that may not match the next room. A repair deals with the damaged area and no more.
We'll be honest about the result. Carpet that has been out in the room for years has faded and worn, so a patch rarely matches it perfectly. A good repair is a real improvement, far less noticeable than the damage, rather than a perfect match.
If a repair isn't the right call for your carpet, we'll tell you.
